Selection

A selection question allows the survey participant to select from a list the most appropriate answer or answers to a question.

For example, you may ask a participant to select their favourite fruit from a list of four fruit.

Question Types - Select Question

The following table details the options that are displayed on the Question view of the question's Component window.

Question Type

The type of question that this is - Selection, in this case.

Question Text

This is the text of the question that will be displayed to participants when they complete the survey.

Image

An optional image to be displayed to participants with the Question Text when the survey is being completed.

To upload an image for this question

  1. Click he Browse button. The File Upload dialog will be displayed.
  2. Locate and select the image that you wish to upload. Click the Open button.
  3. The file location will be copied to the Upload New File text box.
  4. The image will be uploaded when you click the Save button.

Page Break

Determines if this question should be started on a new page or if it should continue inline on the same page as the previous question. When selected, subsequent questions will be displayed on the same page as this question, until another question with a page break is encountered or the end of the Survey is reached.

Is Required

Determines whether or not an answer is mandatory for this question. If this is mandatory then a participant will not be able to continue with the survey until this question is answered.

Report Label

The label that will be used for this question's results when viewed in a report.

Export Label

The label that will be used for this question's results when they are exported to a file.

Options Tab

Quick Add

Allows you to add an option to the question.

To add a question option

  1. In the Quick Add text box, type the option text.
  2. Click the Add button.

When using the Quick Add to add an option the Report Label and Export Label text for that option will automatically be set to the text you typed.

Response Mode

Determines whether a participant can choose the answer that best applies or can select all options that apply.

Layout

Determines how the specified options will be displayed. When the Response Mode is Select all that apply you cannot choose Select List for the Layout.

Rows/Cols

Determines the number of rows or columns for the question options when this survey is viewed on a website.

When a Horizontal Layout is selected, this determines the number of options to display in a row before starting a new column below.

When a Vertical Layout is selected, this determines the number of options to display in a vertical column, before starting another column to the left.

Include Other Option

If this is selected then when this question is presented to the participant it will include an other option allowing them to specify an option not otherwise listed.

Rows

If the other option is included, this determines the number of rows to allow for the other text box.

Columns

If the other option is included, this determines the number of columns to allow for the other text box.

Other Option Label

The label that will be used to indicate the other option.

Other Field Label

The label that will be used on the other field - a field that allows the survey participant to type their alternative option. If you leave this field blank, the default, Other (please specify), will be used.

Abstract Tab

WYSIWYG Editor

An abstract provides additional instructions or comments relating to this question that gives further information to the participant. The abstract WYSIWYG editor allows you to define the HTML abstract that is displayed to a survey participant.

Advanced Tab

Alpha ID

Defines an Alpha ID for this question. This may be used in Survey template tags to refer to this question.

Trigger Content Alert

If Trigger Content Alert is checked you can configure an event listener to monitor for this question being answered. If checked, responses to this question will also be highlighted when being reviewed.

Include Comment

Determines if this question should include a comment field so that survey participants can leave any additional comments that they may have about this question.

Rows

If the comments field is included, this determines the number of rows to allow for the comments text box.

Columns

If the comments field is included, this determines the number of columns to allow for the comments text box.

Comments Field Label

The label that will be used on the comments field - a field that allows the survey participant leave any additional comments about the question. If you leave this field blank, the default, Additional Comments, will be used.
